when I first heard about Tux 500 I was skeptical. That's a lot of money for one advertisement, money that could be spent on, say, getting developers to work on open source code and still pay their bills.
then I was barely online for ages, so I forgot all about it. now I'm catching up on news, and after reading one of Helios' posts I changed my mind. Sure, it's a lot of money... and that donation meter is looking rather weak there. but it seems thatthe mere attempt has gotten linux a fair bit of free publicity. and this isn't just for the corporate distros, it's for the little ones, ones that tend to get overlooked but add that vital diversity that keeps linux strong. reading more posts, it sounds like this project has had some really good effects. it's nice to see what the community is capable of when even a fraction of it works together. it's not so nice to see how viciously some people shoot down ideas they disagree with. I mean, if you don't like it then just don't get involved. there's enough room on the internet for everyone.

oh yeah, and there's still one more day to donate.
